What this looks like
Either Excel offers to “recover” the workbook and the repair drops sheets, formatting, or formulas along the way — or it refuses entirely, with something like “Excel cannot open the file because the file format or file extension is not valid.” Both point at the same underlying problem: the file's internal structure doesn't match what Excel's parser expects.
Why it happens
An .xlsx file is a zip archive of XML parts. A save interrupted partway through, a transfer that mangled bytes (binary-vs-text mode, a truncated upload), an export from another system that wrote the format slightly wrong, or a bad disk sector can all leave that internal structure incomplete or malformed — even though most of the actual data inside it is still intact. Excel's own parser is strict about the structure being exactly right before it'll show you any of it.
